Vaasa is the regional capital of Ostrobothnia, located on the west coast of Finland, with a population of approximately 120,000 people in the sub-region area. The University of Vaasa is situated in Palosaari, about 20 min walk (or 5 min drive) from the city center, where you can find accommodation.

There are two main alternatives how to reach Vaasa. The easiest way is by taking a direct flight from Helsinki (http://www.finnair.com ) or Stockholm (http://www.flysas.com). Both flights take approximately 1 hour and Vaasa Airport is conveniently situated just 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) southeast of the city center. The travel time from the airport to the city center is less than 15 minutes by taxi, which costs approximately 30€ (no Uber or Lyft is operating in Vaasa but you can order a local taxi online at https://www.taksivaasa.fi/en/ or at the airport by using the telephone located at the terminal on the right-hand side once you exit the baggage claim area). All major credit/debit cards are accepted as payments in taxis, as well as euros. Alternatively, public transportation options are available, and you can take Bus #4 from the airport (“Lentokenttä”) to the city center stop (“Raastuvankatu / Rewell Center”). The bus timetable can be found at https://vaasa.digitransit.fi/?locale=en.

The other good option is to take advantage of Finland’s well-connected railway network and travel from Helsinki to Vaasa by train. The journey from Helsinki to Vaasa typically takes around 3½-4 hours, with 8-10 trains running daily. It is recommended to book the train tickets in advance. If you are coming by plane to Helsinki airport, please take a local train (about 10 min) from the airport to Tikkurila, where you can change to train going to Vaasa. You can visit the official website of the Finnish railway operator VR (http://www.vr.fi/en) for detailed information on train schedules, fares, and ticket booking.
